Job Description - Why we need you!

The Modern Classrooms Project is at a pivotal moment in its growth. We are seeking a Chief Marketing Officer who will work closely with MCP’s co-founders to translate their vision into a clear, cohesive, and actionable marketing strategy. This leader will play a central role in shaping how our work is understood in the field, bringing structure and clarity to both our organizational brand and our expanding portfolio of offerings.

As we continue to grow, we are expanding our portfolio of math curriculum-aligned products and need a leader who can ensure these products are thoughtfully positioned and clearly differentiated in the market. At the same time, MCP has built a strong national brand and an abundance of high-quality assets, including classroom videos, teacher testimonials, and earned media, that require an intentional strategy to fully leverage and amplify their impact. This role will be responsible for strengthening our national brand presence, coordinating with external partners on co-marketing and product positioning in the market.

Reporting to our President and Chief Growth Officer, the Chief Marketing Officer will serve as MCP's senior marketing leader, owning brand strategy, product marketing, and communications across the organization. You will lead a talented small team, including a Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and a Senior Manager of Community Engagement, and work cross-functionally with program, partnerships, and product leaders to ensure that MCP's voice, values, and impact reach the audiences who need them most. This is a role for a seasoned marketing leader who is energized by mission-driven work, comfortable operating with significant autonomy, and ready to build and execute at the highest level.

Key Responsibilities:

In collaboration with MCP's executive team and departmental leaders, the Chief Marketing Officer will play a central role in defining and executing the marketing and communications strategy that advances MCP's mission and drives growth across our portfolio of products.

This leadership role entails setting the strategic direction for MCP's brand, overseeing the launch of high-priority initiatives, and ensuring that our marketing function operates at a high level of ambition and excellence. The responsibilities outlined below summarize the primary focus areas for this role:

Brand Strategy and Product Marketing

  • Define and steward MCP's brand identity, voice, and positioning across all channels and audiences, ensuring a clear and compelling national presence.
  • Develop and execute go-to-market strategies for MCP's portfolio of curriculum-aligned products, translating program value into compelling narratives that drive awareness, adoption, and engagement.
  • Lead marketing strategy for emerging offerings, ensuring strong positioning within the education market.
  • Partner closely with math curriculum partners to design and execute coordinated co-marketing and co-branding efforts that amplify shared impact and reach.

Communications

  • Oversee MCP's external communications function, including media relations, thought leadership, newsletters, social media, and content marketing.
  • Develop a cohesive strategy to leverage MCP’s extensive assets, including classroom videos, teacher testimonials, and earned media, to strengthen brand visibility and credibility.
  • Ensure consistency and quality of voice across all external-facing materials and channels.

Leadership and Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications.
  • Set clear direction and performance expectations for the marketing team, conduct regular check-ins, and support team members' growth and development.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with program, partnerships, product, and people teams and work in close partnership with senior leadership to align marketing strategy with organizational vision and priorities.
  • Champion the strategic use of AI-powered tools across marketing workflows, including content development, audience targeting, and campaign optimization, to produce high-quality work efficiently and increase team capacity.
  • Ensure clear and efficient communication of marketing outcomes to the executive team.

We are looking for:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of senior marketing leadership: A demonstrated track record of leading marketing functions at a senior level, ideally within education, nonprofit, or mission-driven sectors, with experience developing organizational brand identity and product go-to-market strategies.

  • Thorough knowledge of integrated communications: Ability to lead a full-spectrum communications function, including media relations, thought leadership, content strategy, and digital marketing, with a strong instinct for what resonates across diverse audiences.

  • AI fluency for marketing work: Comfort and experience using AI-powered tools as a core part of modern marketing practice, from content development and campaign ideation to workflow efficiency. You stay current with how these tools are evolving and bring a point of view about how they can strengthen a team's output without sacrificing quality or authenticity.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of people management and team development: Experience leading and developing marketing professionals at multiple levels, with a management style that balances high expectations with genuine investment in people, including experience managing cross-functional relationships at a senior level.

  • General knowledge of the education sector: Familiarity with K-12 education, its audiences, dynamics, and decision-makers, that enables you to develop marketing strategies that connect meaningfully with educators, administrators, and district leaders.

Compensation and Benefits

We aim to offer a competitive compensation package, as well as the opportunity to work in a fast-growing nonprofit that is on a mission to improve education worldwide. This includes:

  • Salaried position: $180,000 to $210,000 gross base salary per year, plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus as approved by organizational leadership
  • Employer-sponsored health insurance through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
  • Participation in Vanguard 403(b) deferred-compensation plan with 3% employer match
  • Paid Time Off, inclusive of: vacation/PTO (20 days), paid holidays, paid parental leave, sick and safe paid time off, "Me Days", and the ability to earn paid Comp time off
  • Annual budget for MCP-funded Continuous Learning for the program(s) you request (available after 6 months of continuous full-time employment)
  • FSA and Dependent Care FSA access
  • 1x Salary Life Insurance company-paid coverage
  • Access to Wishbone Pet Insurance Benefit
  • Ability to work remotely and to set own hours (within reason)
